The First School of Clinical Medicine (Nanfang Hospital)

The First School of Clinical Medicine (FSCM) works as the base for Nanfang Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of SMU, which along with the former First Military Medical University, was transferred to the administration of Guangdong Province in August, 2004.

As one of earliest authorized medical institutions to offer eight-year doctoral program, FSCM is administratively organized according to the executive hierarchy “school-department-section”. It encompasses four departments (Department of Clinical Medicine, Department of Medical Imaging, Department of Stomatology, and Department of Anesthesiology), fifty-four teaching research sections, one education and training center for clinical medicine.

FSCM has 4,895 medical professionals, including 740 ones with qualified senior professional titles, one academician at Chinese Academy of Sciences, one investigator supported by national significant project for preeminent scientists, one investigator supported by “The Chang Jiang Scholars Program”, one investigator supported by National Significant Project for Junior Scientists, one investigator supported by “The Chang Jiang Scholar Program for Young Scholars, one investigator supported by National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, and three investigators supported by National Funds for Excellent Junior Scientists.

FSCM’s clinical medical sciences has been qualified as the first level discipline authorized to offer doctoral programs and can provide post-doctoral programs in the proper field. Its internal medicine (digestive system diseases) is national key subject, and its surgery (osteological surgery) is national prior developing subject. It has 17 national key construction projects for clinical subjects, 3 TCM subjects included, and 31 key clinical subjects of Guangdong Province. It has one of the thirty first authorized national bases for standard resident doctor training, one of the five first authorized national bases for medical specialties, the Training Center for Clinical Apothecary, and the Training Center for Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

Both of its Clinical Medical Sciences and Medical Imaging are in the lists of National Earliest Authorized A-Class Constructing Disciplines, Cutting-edge Disciplines of the Ministry of Education, and Distinguished Disciplines of Guangdong Province. Its Stomatology, the significant discipline of Guangdong Province, is also listed as one of National Earliest Authorized A-Class Constructing Disciplines. Up to now, the faculty of FSCM have received one second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award, three first prizes and five second prizes of Guangdong Teaching Achievement Award.

FSCM has one of the earliest authorized National Demonstration Center for Clinical Medicine Teaching, one National Demonstration Center for Virtual Teaching, and four Guangdong Demonstration Centers for Pedagogical Experiments in Higher Institutions. Its experiment building covers 25,000m2, in which the central laboratory assumes 4,500m2, the comprehensively qualified experiment animal center and the center for research information management about 2,000m2. With one national key laboratory and one national research center for clinical medicine, FSCM has assumed various kinds of national key projects, such as National Special Project of Science and Technology, National Key Research and Development Program, National Supporting Program of Science and Technology, and National Natural Science Foundation of China (for example, received 102 projects in 2020). The proper research harvests in 2019 involve 544 articles published in SCI journals (47 of them in the top 10% journals of the related academic fields), 1,395 warranted patents (including 520 patents of invention), ten second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 67 first prizes of Guangdong Science and Technology Award. FSCM sponsors five academically influential journals, including Chinese Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and Journal of Nursing.

FSCM has always been charged with various missions of emergent medical rescue and security. Its excellent performance and practices in emergent situations like running to save earthquake victims, providing medical service to the 16th Asian Games (in Guangzhou), were officially acknowledged. In 2008, it was honored as “Heroic Team of Earthquake Relief and Disaster-stricken People Rescue” by Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, the State Council of PRC, and the Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee. In 2020, it was once again conferred honors from the three units above as “National Preeminent Team of Fighting COVID-19”.
