Welcome to Southern Medical University!

Southern Medical University (SMU), formally the First Military Medical University (FMMU) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, was founded in 1951 and qualified as one of national key universities in 1979. SMU established its current name in August 2004 when FMMU was officially devolved to the administration of Guangdong Province. Since its establishment, SMU has cherished its philosophy “Be Learned and Practice; Be Humane and Serve” and continues to practice its credo: “Maintain Integrity and Practicality; Strive to Pioneer and Thrive”. Up to now, SMU has found itself ranking among the top medical universities in China thanks to its remarkable accomplishments in such fields as professional and academic training, research innovation, and social services.

Based on the past 70-year advancement, SMU has developed a comprehensive educational system involving the medical sciences as its leading disciplines; with natural science, engineering, law, management science and education as its cardinal ones. SMU has fostered more than 100,000 medical professionals, serving the Chinese people and all humanity. Among the outstanding graduates, HOU Fanfan and XIA Zhaofan were successively elected as academician of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) or Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). All the harvests and promising prospects, teaching and academic, were assured and will continue to be guaranteed by SMU’s dedicated faculty and staff, especially those preeminent members like ZHONG Shizhen (academician of CAE), founder of modern clinical anatomy in China, YAO Kaitai (academician of CAS), a principal pioneer of nasopharyngeal carcinoma research in China, HOU Fanfan (academician of CAS), a prominent expert in nephrology, and GAO Tianming (academician of CAE), a leading expert in neurobiology, to name but four.

Looking to the future, SMU will continue to cater to the people of Guangdong Province and the whole nation, commit to cultivating excellent medical professionals, and strive to keep pace with our international peers so as to develop into a medical university of national pre-eminence and international influence.
