The Second School of Clinical Medicine (SSCM) of SMU, widely known as Zhujiang Hospital founded in 1947, is a large general hospital integrating medical care, medical teaching, medical research and prevention and healthcare. It is in the earliest national lists of authorized first-class hospital at Grade A, standard resident training base, general practitioner training base, and three national specialist training centers (respectively involving neurosurgery, neonatology, and general surgery).

Based on one national characteristic specialty, one national pilot program of outstanding physician education, and two programs for national top-grade specialty construction, SSCM provides two BM programs, respectively, Paediatrics and Clinical Medicine, one branch of the latter (Excellent Physician Development Program) included.
SSCM’s Clinical Medicine has been qualified as the first level discipline to provide both doctoral and post-doctoral programs. It has twenty-three national or provincial key specialties, one national prior developing subject, one key subject supported by State Administration of TCM, ten national training bases, and two Guangdong provincial management and supervision centers for medical care quality.

SSCM covers an area of 315,000m2 with about 98,000m2 for medical service. It has accommodations for 2,000 patients, yet the practical needs are near 2,600. It has 78 special clinics or sections and 35 teaching research sections. Thriving on its 70-year development, SSCM has established its outstanding reputation in many medical fields, especially firstly for its distinctive specialties, such as the treatment of severe cerebral injury, functional neurosurgery, lumbocrural pain and lumbar intervertebral disc herniation, minimally invasive surgery of spinal canal stenosis, clinical practice of digital medicine, extraction of skull base neoplasms, organ transplantation, stem cell transplantation, severe pediatric diseases, treatment of newborn diseases, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and nuclear medical treatment; and secondly for its outstanding laparoscopic microsurgery in such fields as interventional treatment of oncosis, urology, general surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and gynecology; and lastly for its hearing construction technology which is preeminent in the Chinese mainland.

It is ranked as No.81 in National Performance Appraisals of State-owned First-class Hospitals. According to the evaluation of Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University, two of its subjects has become one of the most prestigious specialties among Chinese hospitals, twenty-two subjects have been among the list of the prestigious specialties in South China. Whereas in the ranking of STEM by the Institute of Medical Information, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, SSCM stands as No.86, and 21 subjects have found their places in the top hundred peers of STEM list, with No.59 as the average ranking.
SSCM has a group of outstanding academic professionals. Among the over 3,900 faculty members, about 500 people have qualified senior professional titles. And 144 of the faculty are doctoral supervisors, 97 master’s supervisors, 118 post-doctoral academic advisors (host professors), and about 90 chairpersons or vice chairpersons of national or provincial academic committees or organizations alike.

The achievements of this group have been highlighted partly by some prominent investigators, including ZHANG Hancheng, the international pioneer of dacryology, SHU Siyun, the discoverer and namer of marginal division of striatum and hippocampus in Humans’ brain (SHU Zone), CHE Xiaoyan, the inventor of the first SARS antigen diagnostic kit in the world, and other honorary professionals, including winners of National Ethical Professional Award, National Excellent Healthcare Practioner Award, Special Subsidy of State Council of China, Chinese Outstanding Doctor Award, National May 1 Labor Award, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the State Candidate of “Hundred, Thousand and Ten thousand Talents Project” in the New Century, and Guangdong Outstanding Medical Professional Award.

As for SSCM’s achievements in teaching and academic training, the highlights lie in two points. First, employment status. In recent years, SSCM enjoyed an employment rate of 96% above, and the graduates were mainly employed by some first-class hospitals in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area, and some domestic and international pharmaceuticals research and development companies, some new media-based healthcare companies, and some government organizations. Second, SSCM’s undergraduates kept a high rate of pursuing further education. In 2020, 85% of the students in the Clinical Medicine (Excellent Physician Development Program) and 75% of the students in Clinical Medicine succeeded in applying for MS education in leading medical colleges or schools of Chinese universities, including Peking Union Medical College (Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences), Health Science Center of Peking University, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhongshan School of Medicine of Sun Yat-Sen University, School of Medicine of Zhejiang University, and Southern Medical University.
